Dr. Dilip Kumar Deka, Secretary and Chief Functionary, Environmental Watch and Management Institute

  

Dr. Dilip Kumar Deka began his scientific career in 1985 as a Research Fellow in the Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, under a Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India-sponsored research projecton the seismicity of the Lower Assam Region. He subsequently pursued his Ph.D. in the same department, focusing on seismic activity and seismic potential in North East India.

Since 2004, he has served as Guest Faculty in the Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, contributing to teaching, research and scientific awareness. He has also served as Founder Head, Department of Environmental Science, Lalit Chandra Bharali College, Guwahati, and as Guest Faculty in Environmental Management at Dimoria College, Khetri.

With more than 40 years of experience in seismology, Earth sciences, environmental science and renewable energy, Dr. Deka has dedicated his career to earthquake research, public awareness and community resilience, particularly in North East India. He has published 19 research papers, contributed articles to books and newspapers, and edited three books on earthquake hazards and preparedness. Through his continued research and public engagement, his present mission is to develop a strategic pathway towards an earthquake-resilient North East India by 2047, contributing to the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. 

Key Area: Earth Sciences and Disaster Resilience

Research, awareness and capacity building in earthquake science, seismology, seismic hazards, natural disasters and disaster resilience, with a focus on safer and resilient communities.
